Business Migrant - Start-Up Visa
Overview
The Start-Up visa is designed for individuals who wish to establish a business in the Isle of Man and meet the necessary eligibility criteria. To qualify for this visa:
- You must have the intention to set up a business in the Isle of Man.
- You need to meet the specified eligibility requirements.
Endorsement Process
The Department for Enterprise is the exclusive endorsing body in the Isle of Man for the Business Migrant route, as stipulated in Appendix X of the Isle of Man Immigration Rules. This department is responsible for providing the Letter of Endorsement, which is a crucial requirement to support your visa application.

Eligibility
You can apply for a Start-Up visa if you fall under any of the following categories:
- You are outside the UK or Isle of Man.
- You hold a valid Isle of Man Worker Migrant visa.
Duration of Stay
With a Start-Up visa, you are permitted to stay in the Isle of Man for 2 years and 4 months. You then apply for an innovator visa without the need for any minimum investment.
Endorsement Withdrawal
If your endorsement from the Department of Enterprise is withdrawn, your visa may be shortened. To extend your stay, you must reapply with a new endorsement before your current visa expires. However, the total stay duration is limited to 2 years, even if you receive a new visa with a new endorsement.
Permitted and Restricted Activities
With a Start-Up visa, you have the following permissions:
- Bringing family members with you.
- Switching to this visa from certain other visa categories.
- Engaging in other employment in addition to working for your business.
However, there are certain activities that you are not allowed to do:
- Accessing public funds.
- Working as a doctor or dentist in training.
- Pursuing a career as a professional sportsperson, such as a sports coach.
- Applying for settlement in the UK on this visa.
Eligibility Criteria
Before applying for the Start-Up visa, your business or business idea must undergo an evaluation by the Department for Enterprise. They will issue a Letter of Endorsement if your business is considered viable, innovative and scaleable.
You must also meet the following requirements:
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Satisfy the English language proficiency requirement.
- Demonstrate sufficient personal savings to support yourself during your stay in the Isle of Man.
